This is the story of my journey as a runner.
My name is Jen and it turns out that I am a RUNNER! Honestly, no one could be more surprised than me! Prior to this discovery, my entire life had been dedicated to dance; jazz, ballet, contemporary, tap -I did it all. I have been a dancer, a dance teacher, a competitive dance coach and now am a dance studio owner. Dance has helped shaped me in many ways and I am so thankful for it. However, my life recently took an unusual turn….
What started with a simple commitment to myself for my 35th birthday, has turned out to be an obsession that I never saw coming. It was October 2013 when I started thinking about “the rest of my life” and how I wanted to live it. Don’t get me wrong, I have a great life-I’m married to an amazing man, 2 beautiful healthy kids, a solid business and overall good health. However I began to feel this need to get outside and reconnect with the world. I was never the outdoorsy type growing up. I hated walking, running, camping, hiking etc….basically the only reason I saw it necessary to go outside was to get in the car -and drive to the dance studio! So needless to say, this pull to get outside and reconnect with nature was super confusing at first. However, I chalked it up to the desire to “get fit” after having kids and began walking every day. Walking soon turned into mild jogging and then into running. With each step I became faster, more confident and more adventurous than I could ever have imagined.
I have now completed a few races….I started with a 2km, then a couple of 5km races and have now accomplished the 10km! This spring will be my first half marathon and I can’t wait!! Then, by the end of 2015 I will conquer the full marathon. If all goes well I do have this crazy idea in my head to run to a neighboring city or maybe even run an ultra one day……hmmmm 😉
